Internship for Wildlife Health – Preparedness & Resilience Department – WOAH HQ Paris, France

Position title: Internship for Wildlife health

Duration: 6 months (from January 2023 to June 2023)

Context  
The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH), previously known as the “Office international des epizooties” (OIE), was founded in 1924. Headquartered in Paris with 12 (Sub-) Regional Representations across the globe, WOAH is an inter-governmental organisation with 182 Member Countries . The organisation is at the forefront of improving global animal health and welfare by collecting, analysing, and disseminating veterinary scientific information in a transparent manner, and encouraging international solidarity in the control of animal health risks. The World Trade Organization recognizes WOAH as the reference organisation for intergovernmental standards concerning the sanitary safety of international trade in animals and products of animal origin and zoonoses.  

Through a One Health approach, we work with partners, particularly WHO, FAO and UNEP, to improve animal, human, and environmental health around the world. To better integrate wildlife health into our overall One Health strategy, a Wildlife Health Framework was developed in 2020 and adopted by all our members through Resolution No. 31 at the WOAH General Session in May 2021. This framework provides goals, objectives, and actions to achieve One Health while protecting wildlife health.  

We are looking for a motivated intern to support the team in continuing to implement the Wildlife Health Framework, where the activities could include topics related to One Health, as well as multisectoral collaboration and capacity building for wildlife health management, monitoring and surveillance systems.

Positioning and reporting
The intern will be under the supervision of Wildlife Health Programme Manager and in collaboration with relevant staff within the department and across other WOAH departments.

Internship role and activities
The Intern will participate in the activities directed by the Preparedness & Resilience Department specifically to:  

One Health, multisectoral coordination and collaboration
– Conduct a comprehensive analysis and needs assessment of stakeholders involved in wildlife health surveillance and monitoring along the wildlife value chain, at all levels (national, regional and global), especially in the context of the implementation of the WOAH Wildlife Health framework to inform targeted actions and partnerships. A methodology to conduct such work will have to be developed.  
– Assist in developing the global and dynamic Reference Centre network.

Advocacy, awareness, and risk communication tools about wildlife health issues, integrating One Health concepts and behaviour change strategies
– Develop and update key technical messages for the topic of wildlife based on scientific research, OIE project activities, and partner activities in alignment with the communication strategy.
– Alert communications team of new scientific evidence that impact wildlife communications after developing an alert system mechanism.
– Contribute to the Wildlife Health Programme activities as require Upon completion of the internship, the intern will provide a final report summarising activities undertaken and follow-up actions required.

Required Skills and Experience
Education
– Candidates must meet one of the following educational requirements: currently enrolled in a post-graduate academic programme; orhave graduated no longer than 1 year ago from a post-graduate programme or equivalent studies.
– Field of study: Wildlife health, veterinary science, wildlife management, disease ecology, surveillance systems.

Requirements
Technical skills
– Excellent command, both written and spoken, of English;
– Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, interpersonal);
– Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Additional language skills
– French and/or Spanish is an asset.

Technical Competencies
– Analytical ability: problem definition and establishing research questions;
– Problem-solving.

Behavioural Competencies
– Genuinely curious with a learning mindset;
– Ability to engage in the work and mandate of the WOAH;
– Courtesy, tact and ability to establish and maintain good working relations in a multinational and multicultural environment;

– Adaptable and flexible.

Internship conditions
The WOAH will provide a stipend in the amount of 659,10€ monthly for full time work; This is a full-time internship based in Paris, France. The maximum internship duration is 6 months; The intern must provide proof of enrolment in health insurance plan.
