1. Organizational Context

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) leads international efforts to eradicate hunger and achieve food security for all. The FAO Representation in Madagascar also covers Comoros, Mauritius and Seychelles.
With funding from the Government of Japan, FAO will launch a project to strengthen the management of abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear (ALFDG) and reduce plastic pollution in the Western Indian Ocean. Two specialists will oversee on-the-ground implementation in the Seychelles.


2. Reporting Lines

  • Overall supervision: FAO Representative (Madagascar, Comoros, Mauritius, Seychelles)
  • Direct supervision: Deputy FAO Representative
  • Collaboration: Lead Technical Officer (LTO) and programme team
  • Duty station: Seychelles

3. Technical Focus

Project management • Fisheries waste and plastic-waste management • Pollution prevention and reduction.


4. Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the national focal point for all project matters in the Seychelles.
  • Map and engage stakeholders identified in the Project Document.
  • Coordinate with government counterparts and partners throughout implementation.
  • Assist the Project Coordinator in drafting a comprehensive work plan (budget, procurement, HR, operations).
  • Support preparation and administration of contracts, Terms of Reference and Letters of Agreement (LoAs).
  • Organize field missions, meetings, trainings and capacity-building events, including all logistics.
  • Produce regular progress reports on Seychelles activities.
  • Participate in virtual and in-person project meetings.
  • Disseminate results nationally and draft communication materials with the FAO communications team.

5. Minimum Requirements

EducationUniversity degree in marine ecosystem management, (plastic/solid) waste management, or fisheries development.
ExperienceAt least two (2) years of professional experience in project management support and fisheries development.
LanguageWorking knowledge of English (oral and written).
NationalityMust be a citizen of the Seychelles.

7. Selection Criteria

  • Experience working in developing-country contexts.
  • Familiarity with UN project procedures—FAO experience preferred.
  • Proven ability to build effective partnerships with governmental and non-governmental stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and spoken English; proficiency in French is an asset.
  • Cultural sensitivity, strong interpersonal skills.
  • Relevance of academic qualifications and hands-on experience in project, waste- or fisheries-management.
  • Personal qualities: self-driven, collaborative, patient, confident, reliable, empathetic.
  • Demonstrated analytical and organizational abilities.
