Context
Cameroon has been facing a major cholera epidemic since October 2021. This outbreak started among fishermen populations in the maritime health districts of the South West region and then progressively spread to the rest of the country (8 regions out of 10). As of July 2023, a total of 19447 cases and 463 deaths were reported (CFR=2.38%). Historically, cholera outbreaks have shown to spread in maritime regions of Cameroon notably the South West, the Littoral and the South, and particularly among fishermen populations which are vulnerable to Cholera spread due to their exposure, their commercial activities, and their socio-economic status. The same pattern has been observed in other countries along the Gulf of Guinea. To better understand the transmission pattern of Cholera outbreaks and to inform decision making, the World Health Organization (WHO) has initiated a project aiming to document the dynamic of transmission of Cholera outbreaks and characterize fishermen communities through an anthropologic study. This project will enable governments to identify the necessary WASH activities to stop Cholera transmission and will produce recommendations that can eventually be integrated in a multi-country action plan and in Cholera national preparation and response plans. This project will be implemented in 04 countries in the Gulf of Guinea (Benin, Cameroon, Nigeria, and Togo). In Cameroon, the project will be implemented in maritime health districts of the Littoral, South, and South West regions.
As this project is an anthropologist study, WHO needs to recruit a social-anthropologist whom will contribute to the design, implementation, analysis, and dissemination of the study.
Job description
The socio-anthropologist will work under the direct supervision of the project coordinator and the Incident Manager of the WHO Cholera Incident Management System. The incumbent will be recruited for a period of 06 months, duration of the project, and shall implement the following activities:
- Elaboration of the research protocol including methodology, data collection tools, data analysis plan, ethical documents…
- Contribution to the acquisition of the ethical clearance including constitution of the file for submission to the ethical committee, follow-up the procedure, amend the protocol as needed following the comments of the ethical committee to obtain the clearance
- Contribution to the elaboration of the data management plan
- Training of study team on the anthropological aspects and the use of necessary tools
- Field visits to meet up authorities, communities, and collect data
- Data synthesis, cleaning, analysis, and reporting
- Elaboration of reports, presentations, scientific articles
- Dissemination of project results

Requirements
For this position, the candidate must meet the following requirements
Education
A License in social sciences (sociology or anthropology)
Experience
At least 1 year working in social anthropology and research
Experience with qualitative data analysis software
Experience implementing research projects in the field
Experience coordinating teams in the field
Language
Mastery of french and english
