Au cours des dix dernières années, la production familiale extensive de lapin a progressivement fait place à la production semi-intensive. Cette transformation des systèmes d’élevage a entraîné une évolution des techniques de production. Aujourd’hui, il existe de petits élevages familiaux de 2 à 5 lapines mères et des élevages de taille moyenne de 20 à 50 lapines mères. On note parfois des élevages de grande taille pouvant atteindre 100 à 200 lapines mères.
