Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) occurs when microorganisms no longer respond to antimicrobials that were once effective. On a global scale, AMR is a complex and significant challenge. The One Health perspective of AMR recognizes the interrelationships between human, animal, and environmental sectors. The use of antimicrobials in any one sector has the potential to impact all three. Overuse and repeated exposures to antibiotics and antifungals has led to the widespread selection of resistant microbial populations. These populations can traverse and establish new communities in multiple One Health sectors. Microbes can also transfer resistance determinants to new communities, furthering the spread and reach of AMR.
Understanding the biology behind the development, transfer, and spread of resistance is crucial to develop mitigation strategies. The purpose of this Collection is to present AMR research in the One Health context as it pertains to bacteria and fungi in order to highlight advances made in the field as well as to draw attention to any potential research gaps. Topics could include but are not limited to:
- Development of resistance in One Health sectors
- AMR transmission between One Health sectors
- Mitigation strategies including alternatives to antibiotics/antifungals
- Antimicrobial use and relationship to AMR
- Rapid methods for antibiotic/antifungal resistance detection and implementation studies
