Looking back: South Sudan, in collaboration with the African Union–Interafrican Bureau for Animal Resources, successfully held a National Stakeholders’ Consultative and Validation Workshop from March 25–27, 2025, in Juba. The workshop aimed to align national fisheries and aquaculture strategies, along with agricultural investment plans, with the African Union’s Policy Framework and Reform Strategy for Fisheries and Aquaculture in Africa. Participants also addressed climate change adaptation and the domestication of relevant global instruments to strengthen policy coherence and resilience in the sector. Speaking on behalf of the Director of the African Union–Interafrican Bureau for Animal Resources, Dr. Huyam Salih, Mr. Rafik Nouaili emphasized the importance of harmonizing national policies with continental and global frameworks, while highlighting the support of the European Union-funded second phase of the Fisheries Governance Project in Africa.
The workshop brought together key stakeholders from government institutions, non-governmental organizations, the private sector, and research institutions for a collaborative process of consultation and validation. Guided by expert input from national consultant Dr. Jackson Mogga, the sessions produced actionable recommendations to enhance governance and sustainability in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors. In his opening address, Mr. Maknei Malual of the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries underscored the need for stronger partnerships and timely implementation of strategies. By aligning with the African Union Policy Framework and Reform Strategy for Fisheries and Aquaculture (PFRS) and prioritizing climate resilience, South Sudan is positioning itself to build a robust, sustainable blue economy that supports food security, environmental health, and economic development.
