The African Union Commission (AUC) is hiring a Senior Policy Officer – Trade & Economy (P3) for its Permanent Delegation of the African Union to the UN and other international organizations in Geneva, Switzerland. The role supports the Mission’s mandate of coordinating African Group activities and representing the AU in Geneva, with a strong focus on trade and economic issues, including work linked to the WTO and relevant UN committees.

Purpose of the job

Based in Geneva, the Senior Policy Officer will oversee economic and trade issues, support AU Member States in articulating common positions, and contribute to the Mission’s strategic planning, reporting, and coordination with AU Commission departments and external stakeholders.


Main duties (summary)

Under the supervision of the Permanent Representative, the officer will:

  • Support the preparation and implementation of programmes derived from the Mission’s strategic plan.
  • Help AU Member States build and defend common African positions on trade matters (especially in WTO and UN settings).
  • Produce technical analysis, position papers, and timely internal reports.
  • Contribute to work programmes, budgeting, and (where applicable) resource mobilization coordination.
  • Participate in African Group, WTO and UN meetings and report back.
  • Support visibility and promotion of the Mission’s activities (guidelines, fact sheets, outreach material).

Academic requirements & experience

Applicants must meet one of the following:

  • Master’s in Economics, Trade or related field + 7 years relevant experience (including 3 years at expert level), or
  • Bachelor’s + 10 years relevant experience (including 3 years at expert level).

Required skills

  • Strong grounding in economic and trade concepts
  • Independent research capacity; ability to synthesize technical work for non-specialists
  • Data analysis for decision-making
  • Planning, organizing, reporting, and strong writing skills.

Languages

  • Proficiency in one AU working language is mandatory (Arabic, English, French, Kiswahili, Portuguese, Spanish).
  • A second AU language is an advantage.

Contract & remuneration (indicative)

  • Tenure: Regular term contract of 3 years, including 12 months probation, then 2 years renewable subject to performance/deliverables.
  • Salary: Indicative basic salary US$ 37,453 (P3 Step 1) per annum, plus entitlements such as post adjustment, housing allowance, and education allowance (per eligibility rules).
