The workshop, held from June 27 to July 1, 2022, in Naivasha, Kenya, made several recommendations, and formed several outcomes; namely:
1. The validated report on the value chain analysis and mapping of the regional poultry farming value chain in the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) region.
2. The reviewed Regional Poultry Value Chain Development Plan.
3. A Roadmap to guide the regional poultry value chain implementation strategy.
Thirty-six (36) participants from different ECCAS countries, including Angola, Burundi, Cameroon, Congo, Gabon, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Chad, as well as the CEBEVIRHA representative were present and supported by a multidisciplinary AU-IBAR team. These participants were representative of the various stakeholder categories in the poultry value chain in the sub-region (directors of animal production, heads of veterinary offices, the private sector, marketing and processing experts, agricultural cooperatives, etc.)
Speaking during the workshop on behalf of AU-IBAR’s Acting Director, Dr Nick Nwankpa, Prof James Wabacha highlighted the many interventions made so far toward value chain development work for the ECCAS region. These interventions include:
1. Value Chain Analysis and Mapping of the Poultry Regional Value Chain in Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS).
2. Building of technical and infrastructural capacities of national agricultural extension services, women and youth farmer associations, poultry breeders associations, in technologies and innovation, record keeping, and networking
3. The proposed establishment of a parent stock farm to be hosted in Cameron to supply quality genetic stock of day-old chicks to all stakeholders.
4. Hosting of the region’s African Union Animal Resources Seed Center of Excellence at the University of Dschang.
The event comes as part of the AU-IBAR’s commitment to supporting the development of regional livestock value chains under the implementation of the “Sustainable Development of Livestock for Livelihoods in Africa – Live2Africa” Project, which the European Union funds.
