About WorldFish  

WorldFish is an international research organization working to transform aquatic food systems to reduce hunger, malnutrition, and poverty. It collaborates with international, regional, and national partners to co-develop and deliver scientific innovations, evidence for policy and knowledge to enable equitable and inclusive impact for millions who depend on fish and other aquatic foods for their livelihoods and nutrition. Our work in countries advances progress on multiple 2030 Sustainable Development Goals through science and innovation, with a vision of healthy people, healthy planet and shared prosperity.  

 Background

Funded by Norad, the FASA project is being implemented in Nigeria, Zambia, and Kenya, with additional research components in Malaysia and Sweden. The project aims to scale sustainable, affordable, and nutritionally optimized aquatic feeds to strengthen resilience within aquatic food systems.

To support this initiative, WorldFish is seeking an experienced Consultant to develop the architecture and foundational components of the FASA Feed Formulation App—a tool designed to help farmers create cost-effective and nutritionally balanced tilapia feed formulations tailored to local contexts across Kenya, Zambia, and Nigeria.

The consultant will be responsible for:

  • Building the App Structure: Design and implement the app’s architecture to support a comprehensive database of local ingredients, nutritional profiles, and pricing.
  • Back-End Development: Develop a robust back-end system to handle data integration, real-time updates, and advanced optimization algorithms for cost and nutritional precision.
  • Template and User Interface Design: Create a user-friendly interface with localized content and language support to ensure accessibility and ease of use for farmers.
  • User Creation and Sign-In Functionality: Implement secure user authentication and data protection measures to support a growing user base and ensure data privacy.

Scope of Work

The consultant will undertake the following tasks to develop the FASA Feed Formulation App:

  • App Architecture Design: Develop a scalable and efficient architecture to support the app’s functionalities, including a comprehensive database of local ingredients and nutritional profiles.
  • Back-End System Development: Implement a robust back-end system capable of handling data integration, real-time updates, and optimization algorithms to ensure cost and nutritional precision.
  • User Interface and Template Design: Create an intuitive and user-friendly interface with localized content and language support to facilitate ease of use and accessibility for farmers.
  • User Authentication and Data Security: Develop secure user creation and sign-in functionalities to protect user data and support a growing user base, ensuring compliance with data privacy standards.
  • Integration and Testing: Conduct thorough testing to ensure seamless integration of real-time data updates for ingredient availability and pricing, maintaining accuracy and relevance.
  • Documentation and Training: Provide comprehensive documentation and training materials to ensure smooth handover and enable users to effectively utilize the app.

Skills, Experience and Knowledge

  • Proven experience as a data scientist, data engineer, or research software engineer, ideally in an applied or Proficiency in app architecture design and back-end development.
  • Experience with database management and integration of real-time data updates.
  • Strong knowledge of user interface and template design, with a focus on user experience.
  • Expertise in programming languages such as Python, Java, or similar.
  • Familiarity with frameworks and tools for mobile app development.
  • Experience using GitHub for version control and collaboration.

  • A fully functional app that optimizes feed formulation processes.
  • Enhanced user experience through a localized and accessible interface.
  • Secure and scalable system supporting a growing user base.
  • Reliable integration of real-time data for accurate feed solutions.

Consultancy Duration

The consultancy is expected to run until July 2026 and may only be extended based on funding availability.

Evaluation and Selection

Applications will be evaluated based on the qualifications and experience of the consultant, the quality and feasibility of the proposed approach and work plan, the relevance of previous work examples and the most competitive proposal. Shortlisted candidates may be invited for an interview or request additional information before final selection. This opportunity is open for all applicants.
